Middleburg’s Project Helping Hands will partner with Inova’s Children Hospital, The Community Coalition for Haiti, regional citizens and leading corporations to raise funds for Haiti February 26th at the “Join Hands for Haiti” benefit.  The Dessert Pot Luck party and auction will take place from 7:30 to 10 p.m. at the Middleburg Community Center.

Fabulous auction items are already promised and a long list of popular musicians will be on hand to provide star-studded entertainment.

Designed to help the long-term needs of Haitian earthquake victims, the benefit follows similar successful initiatives to help victims of Hurricane Katrina and the Indonesian Tsunami, both of which raised important contributions to relieve suffering and support recovery.

Among the auction items are a three-day/two-night Preferred Golf Package for Two at Innisbrook Resort & Golf Club - Located in Palm Harbor, Florida, just 20 miles from Tampa International Airport, Innisbrook Resort & Golf Club is known as one of America’s top golf destinations.  Innisbrook offers four championship golf courses, 600 suite accommodations, 11 tennis courts, six swimming pools including the Loch Ness pool with water slides, new Fitness Center, Indaba Spa, and restaurants.  The Preferred Golf Package includes spacious accommodations in a one-bedroom suite, breakfast daily at the Clubhouse of your choice, 18 holes of golf and one-hour golf clinics daily, and much more.

A painting by well known Haitian artist Frantz Zephirin is 30” x 40”, and is entitled “The Oppressed”. It represents Alix Cedras, the military dictator in Haiti during the years 1991-1994, after the first ouster of Aristide. It shows him standing on the shoulders of Haiti (red rooster) and the United States (blue eagle). Another painting Mr. Zephirin Graces the cover of The New Yorker this week.

A spectacular Haitian art form the sequin-covered Drapo Vodou or “Voodoo Flag” by Eviland Lalanne, who was a renowned flag-maker. Vodou banners derive directly from the practice of the Vodou religion, a syncretism of traditional African religions brought to Haiti by slaves, with the Catholicism of their former masters. The banners are traditionally the work of practicing vodou priests and their followers. They are displayed in the vodou sanctuaries and are carried at the commencement of a ceremony. Each flag depicts the vévé symbol or image of the loa to which it is devoted. The flags are made of shiny silk fabrics to which have been sewn a brilliant mosaic of sequins and beads. A full-size banner typically contains 18,000 to 20,000 sequins and may take ten days to complete.

Paintings by well known Middleburg area artists Tom Neel, Simon Bland and Kevin Chadwick
Designer table cloths by Kevin Chadwick, Wendy Pepper, Manuel Simpson, and Joan Gardiner and other local personalities, artists and celebrities.

Guests are asked to bring a dessert that will serve at least eight, and their beverage of choice.  Coffee and soft drinks will be served. Admission is $25 per person at the door.
