Patia Fann, a Foxcroft School senior from of Purcellville, VA, has been named a Commended Student in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program, Foxcroft Head of School Catherine S. McGehee announced Monday at anall-school meeting.

More than 1.5 million juniors in 21,000 U.S. high school enter the 2016 program by taking the 2014 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) last fall. Just 34,000 of them, chosen from among the 50,000 high scorers on the exam, earned commended student status.

Patia scored in the top two percent of all test-takers, well enough to have been a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist in several less populated states.

Although she will not continue in the 2016 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Patia may be eligible for special scholarships and grants. The National Merit® Program honors individual students who show exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college studies, awarding scholarships worth $33 million
